St. Vincent’s Former Medical Staff Asks Hospital for Assistance in Paying Malpractice Insurance Premiums

Nearly 80 former members of the medical staff at the now-shuttered St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York are asking the hospital for financial assistance with medical malpractice premiums, which can reach up to $40,000 per year, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The group, comprised largely of physicians, believes the hospital has a legal obligation to cover the physicians’ malpractice coverage expenses until time expires for patients treated at St. Vincent’s to file malpractice suits, which in most cases is 2.5 years, according to the report.

An attorney for the physicians’ group is currently in negotiations with the hospital, which is now in bankruptcy.
