South Dakota nurse charged with replacing opioid meds with other drugs

A Tea, S.D., nurse was indicted with replacing opioid and other medications with different medications.

Brittany Enstad, 39, was charged with tampering with consumer products and obtaining controlled substances by misrepresentation, fraud, forgery, deception and subterfuge, according to a June 9 Justice Department press release.

The indictment alleges that between July 1 and December 30, 2022, Ms. Enstad, who was employed as a licensed registered nurse at a medical facility, tampered with blister packs containing OxyContin, hydrocodone bitartrate, oxycodone hydrochloride, and oxycodone and acetaminophen. She allegedly removed the medications from their packs and replaced them with different medications.

On June 7, Ms. Enstad appeared before a judge and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The maximum penalty if convicted would be up to 10 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release and up to $800 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. She may also be ordered to pay restitution.
