Senators Ask OIG to Investigate Medicare Contractors’ Conflicts of Interest

Democratic Senate leaders are saying private companies involved in Medicare claims processing may have conflicts of interest, according to a report by Reuters.

Subsidiaries of WellPoint, Hewlett Packard’s HP Enterprise Services and other companies have dual roles in carrying out payments and overseeing the payment process, Senate aides said.  

“We need a thorough examination of relationships between the contractors paying Medicare claims and their related corporate entities in charge of overseeing those same payments to make sure taxpayer dollars aren’t being wasted,” Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus said in a statement.

Sen. Baucus and two other committee chairs are asking the HHS Office of the Inspector General to investigate.
