Rep. Fleming has called for a full and independent audit of the site to ensure people’s information is secure before the site is permitted to collect personal data, according to the report. The legislation is a response to the various technical problems the site has experienced since its launch earlier this month, with people not being able to create accounts on HealthCare.gov, dysfunctional drop down tools and the site crashing due to high traffic.
Republican lawmakers have criticized the Obama administration for the bumpy rollout and pointed to the errors as evidence of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act’s poor design. Some have called for HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to step down. However, she hasn’t indicated any intent of resigning, and the Obama administration has expressed full confidence in her.
Yesterday, President Barack Obama acknowledged the technical problems and said officials are working to correct them. However, he also emphasized the healthcare reform law is bigger than just a website.
