PPACA State Exchange Enrollment Success Varies

The 15 state-run exchanges have experienced varying degrees of success so far, with some running into technical problems similar to those that have plagued the federal exchange, according to a Politico report.

Despite technical issues, Washington state’s exchange is leading the nation with nearly 49,000 people enrolled in exchange plans and Medicaid as of Monday, according to the report. The glitches — such as error codes and issues reconciling state tax records with the federal government — are being addressed through regular overnight weekend maintenance, according to the report.

Other states have seen a slower uptake. For instance, only 3,164 people have enrolled in health plans through Colorado’s exchange, according to the report. A feature allowing people to get their tax credit eligibility determined online was delayed but is available on the state exchange site as of this week.

Some, like Oregon, have experienced so many problems state officials have told residents to use paper applications rather than waiting for the website to work. It’s still unclear whether the Oregon exchange site will be functional by Dec. 15, the deadline for consumers to enroll to receive coverage starting Jan. 1, according to the report.
