Police shoot woman in Georgia hospital ER

A police officer shot a woman May 1 in the emergency department of Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton, Ga.

In the early-morning hours of May 1, Dalton police were dispatched to the emergency department in response to a call about a woman barricading herself in a patient room, damaging equipment and resisting hospital staff as they tried to intervene.

"When officers arrived, they encountered the hostile subject and attempted to take her into custody," a news release from the Police Department stated. "In that process, the officer received injuries to his eyes and the officer discharged his weapon and struck the suspect."

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the woman threw hand sanitizer into one of the officer's eyes, causing him to temporarily lose sight.

The gunshot wound was not life-threatening, with police noting the suspect, identified as Chevona Doughty, 41, was treated for the wound. The officer was also treated for his injuries. Ms. Doughty was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, obstruction of officer and criminal damage, according to the Journal-Constitution.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident, the release said.

Hamilton Medical Center is a 255-bed hospital about 20 miles south of the Tennessee border.
