Police did not identify the man who was killed or the officer or officers who were involved in the 8 a.m. incident on Nov. 3, according to the report.
Police arrived at the hospital in response to reports that an armed patient was threatening staff, said Trooper Robert T. Hicks.
“Officers made several attempts to subdue the patient without success,” Mr. Hicks said. “The male was able to continue to brandish the knife and threaten the officers during the attempts to subdue him and he was shot.”
No one else was injured, and the incident is under investigation by state police and the Franklin County district attorney and coroner’s offices, according to the report.
