Police: Patient kicks physician unconscious at New York hospital

Police arrested a 56-year-old man last week who became combative with hospital staff at East Meadow, N.Y.-based Nassau University Medical Center, according to ABC7 News.

Investigators said Joseph Hores became agitated with hospital staff after they refused to give him the treatment he wanted. While lying in his hospital bed, Mr. Hores reportedly kicked a physician in the face, causing him to lose consciousness. The physician was later treated for a concussion.

Mr. Hores proceeded to punch a hospital public safety officer in the face after they attempted to intervene in the situation.

Hospital staff eventually restrained him. However, Mr. Hores reportedly gained access to a lighter inside his pocket while in his bed and lit his bed sheets on fire. The flames were extinguished quickly and no other injuries were reported, ABC7 News reports.

Police arrested and charged Mr. Hores with two counts of assault, arson and criminal mischief. He was arraigned on Aug. 19.

A Nassau University Medical Center spokesperson told ABC7 News in a prepared statement Aug. 17: "Nassau University Medical Center security officers responded to a report of a confrontation between a patient and a doctor. As a result of this immediate response by security personnel and demonstrated professionalism, the suspect has been apprehended and is currently in police custody. The doctor remains in stable condition and is being treated for minor injuries. We will continue to cooperate with law enforcement authorities throughout their continuing investigation of the incident."
