Mr. Freer reportedly set his bedding on fire with a cigarette lighter shortly after 9 p.m. Friday, according to a criminal complaint. The incident reportedly occurred near an oxygen tank and several people. No one was injured.
A police officer with knowledge of the case said officials initially brought Mr. Freer to the hospital because he was intoxicated. He was not in custody at that time, the report states.
Mr. Freer was arraigned Aug. 5 in criminal court on misdemeanor chargers of arson, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. He remains in police custody and will return to court Aug. 10.
