Planned Parenthood ready to fight restrictive abortion law in Florida

Planned Parenthood already has plans to challenge a law signed Friday by Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) that defunds the organization and other abortion clinics, according to The Hill.

Federal law blocks funding for abortions, but the new law takes this a step further by eliminating taxpayer funds and increasing regulations for abortion clinics in the state, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Specifically, the law requires abortion clinics to undergo annual inspections, requires physicians who perform abortions at clinics to have admitting privileges at a local hospital and prohibits the sale, purchase or transfer of fetal tissue, according to the report. It is similar to a Texas law the U.S. Supreme Court is currently reviewing, according to the report.

"As a result of this bill, thousands of people across Florida may no longer be able to access essential reproductive healthcare, such as cancer screenings, birth control, and well-woman exams," said Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, according to the Orlando Sentinel. "This cruel bill is designed to rip healthcare away from those most at risk."

Pro-life groups have lauded the law, saying it will lead to higher quality care at abortion clinics, according to the report.
