Physician found guilty of making false statements in fraud scheme

A Charlotte, N.C., physician was found guilty of making false statements in connection with a scheme that defrauded federal benefits programs of more than $5 million.

Sudipta Mazumder, 47, was found guilty by a federal jury on six counts of making false statements relating to healthcare matters, according to a Sept. 26 Justice Department news release.

Dr. Mazumder worked as an independent contractor for a telemedicine company in 2019 and 2020, according to the release. She signed fraudulent orders for necessary equipment for patients insured by Medicare and Tricare. She had little or no interaction with the beneficiaries and made no determination as to whether the devices were medically necessary.
