Four things to know:
1. Samrat Mukherjee, 35, of Baton Rouge, La., admitted to posing as a physician and fabricating credentials, including a fake medical degree and residency match letter, according to a March 10 Justice Department news release.
2. From May 2019 to around November 2022, Mr. Mukherjee called in prescriptions to pharmacies for himself and others. He used the identities of two physicians and fraudulently claimed to have the authority to write prescriptions. He caused the pharmacies to submit claims for reimbursement to Medicaid, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana and other insurers.
3. By falsely representing himself as a medical doctor, he was also given physician access privileges at several hospitals, where he spent time seeing patients in the intensive care unit and other areas.
4. He faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000, or twice the gross gain or loss, whichever is greater.
