Though the U.S. prepares to implement the new code set in October, less than nine months from now, it is still greatly behind other countries in coding and claim documentation. For instance, the United Kingdom adopted ICD-10 in 1995.
Providers and facilities can look on the bright side as they are training and preparing. ICD-9 is greatly limited in the number of new codes that can be created, and it does not reflect current medical knowledge. ICD-10 specificity and detail will help providers track outcomes, patient improvement and costs.
