OIG to recover nearly $6B in fraudulent payments

Almost $6 billion in fraudulent payments is expected to be recovered by HHS' Office of Inspector General, federal officials said in their semiannual report to Congress.

The report concerns audits and investigations that took place from April 1 through Sept. 30. For the six-month period, OIG projected to recover $819.15 million from audits and $5.04 billion from investigations.

Within the period, OIG said it made a "first-of-its-kind investigation of a major genetic testing fraud scheme" and reported on "challenges meeting the mental health needs of unaccompanied children in HHS custody."

Overall, OIG issued 91 audit reports and 36 evaluation reports during the reporting period. The office also made 367 new audit and evaluation recommendations.
