Boston Medical Center received roughly $90,000 in Medicare overpayments from 2006-2010 due to incorrect coding, according to a report from the Office of Inspector General.
Billing on behalf of its physicians, the 639-bed hospital erred in coding 7,520 claims by using non-facility place-of-service codes for services that were actually rendered in hospital outpatient facilities. The place-of-service code can bring in different reimbursements due to overhead costs.
The OIG had recommended BMC refund the overpayments to the Medicare contractor. BMC has concurred and agreed to pay the $89,724.
