NY physician pleads guilty in $14.2M Medicare fraud scheme

A New York physician has admitted he and other medical providers at his clinic submitted $14.2 million in fraudulent claims to Medicare for medically unnecessary treatments, according to the Department of Justice.

Roman Johnson, MD, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud. Dr. Johnson admitted the fraudulent claims submitted to Medicare were for vitamin infusions, physical therapy and occupational therapy that were medically unnecessary.

As part of his plea agreement, Dr. Johnson agreed to pay nearly $5.4 million in restitution to the Medicare program, which represented the amount Medicare paid him as a result of the fraudulent claims, according to the DOJ.
