The Illinois House Human Services Appropriations Committee has included the $463 million cut in its budget proposal, and the IHA has responded by suggesting the state extend the payment cycle rather than enacting across-the-board cuts, according to the report.
Illinois Medicaid currently has a payment backlog of nearly $450 million, for bills going back to early January, according to the report.
“Hospitals would rather be paid timely payments, [but it’s] better to be paid late than taking inadequate payment, because the Medicaid program is already paying less than the cost to deliver Medicaid care,” said Howard Peters, executive vice president of the IHA.
