Nurse alleges age discrimination in lawsuit against Missouri hospital

A nurse has filed a lawsuit claiming she was fired by Women's and Children's Hospital in Columbia, Mo., due to age discrimination, according to The Columbia Missourian.

Cynthia Roberts, RN, now age 64, filed the lawsuit against the Board of Curators of the University of Missouri as well as Christina Vollrath, MSN, RN, director of nursing services at Women's and Children's Hospital; Matt Waterman, the hospital's director of surgical services; and Pam Holliday, manager of surgical services. The trial began July 23.

The lawsuit claims Ms. Holliday made several discriminatory remarks about Ms. Roberts' age while Ms. Roberts was working at Women's and Children's Post-Anesthetic Care Unit. Mr. Waterman fired Ms. Roberts on May 7, 2015, when she was 60 years old. Ms. Vollrath claims the firing was the result of a patient complaint.

The defendants say other patients had previously complained about Ms. Roberts' behavior over a three-year period, and that she had previously been written up by three different supervisors and suspended for showing up late while on-call.

The hospital did not respond to Becker's request for comment.
