New Bill Would Protect Hospitals Against FCA Claims Resulting From Billing Errors

A bill introduced yesterday in the House of Representatives aims to keep hospitals from facing a False Claims lawsuit if the improper claims resulted from a billing error, according to an AHA News report.

The Fairness in Health Care Claims, Guidance and Investigations Act, introduced by Reps. Howard Coble (R-N.C.) and David Scott (D-Ga.) would raise the burden of proof in FCA suits and help hospitals avoid legal prosecution for unintentional billing disputes, according to the report.

Recently, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center paid close to $1 million to settle False Claims Act allegations that stemmed from a billing error.
