Michigan urgent care physician faces multiple felonies for improper billing

Bassel Altantawi, MD, of Farmington Hills, Mich., is facing 22 felony charges after police received a tip that he was committing billing fraud, according to the Michigan Attorney General's Office.

Dr. Altantawi, 45, a physician at Canton (Mich.) Urgent Care, allegedly repeatedly billed Medicaid and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan for services he never provided.

Dr. Altantawi has been charged with nine counts of Medicaid fraud, 12 counts of healthcare fraud and one count of continuing criminal enterprise.

The investigation is ongoing, and any patient who was seen by Dr. Altantawi who believes he billed for services never provided is encouraged to contact the Michigan Attorney General's Health Care Fraud Division.
