Medical equipment suppliers convicted of $3.8M healthcare fraud scheme

A federal jury convicted the owner and manager of a medical equipment supply company for a scheme to defraud Medicare Advantage and Medicaid managed care plans of more than $3.8 million.

Ikechukwu Udeokoro, 47, of North Bergen, N.J., and Ayodeji Fasonu, 56, of Bridgeport, Conn., were convicted on healthcare fraud charges, according to a Feb. 7 Department of Justice  news release. Mr. Udeokoro owned New York City-based Meik Medical Equipment and Supply, and Mr. Fasonu worked as manager.

The men were found guilty of billing Medicare Advantage and Medicaid managed care plans for hundreds of expensive patient support systems that were never provided to patients or caregivers, according to the release. From December 2010 to February 2014, the men fraudulently billed the federal payers more than $3.8 million and were paid $2.4 million.

Mr. Udeokoro and Mr. Fasonu are scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 14 and Aug. 16, respectively, and each face a maximum of 10 years in prison.
