A Colorado Department of Law investigation found that from December 2018 through October 2019, Flatirons sent confusing billing statements to patients who had received treatment from out-of-network surgical assistants, according to a Jan. 19 news release from the Colorado Attorney General’s Office.
The letters often contained statements such as “This Is Not A Bill However We Need Your Assistance!! Please Call Your Insurance And Request This Claim Be Processed In-network Per State Mandate,” according to the release. This caused some patients to think there was an issue with their insurance, when, in actuality, the surgical assistant was outside their network and requesting a separate fee.
About 40 patients made a payment on the misleading bills, according to the report. Flatirons will refund those patients a total of $13,000.
