Under the new law, set to take effect Wednesday, employers would be able to mail-order prescription drugs from certain pharmacies in Canada and overseas. Maine is the first to enact such a law, though many cities and municipalities along the Canadian border already have drug purchasing agreement with Canadian pharmacies and as many as a dozen other states have considered laws similar to Maine’s, according to the report.
The new law has already triggered a lawsuit, filed by several pharmacy groups in the state and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, seeking a federal ruling declaring drug importation illegal, according to the report.
