Lawsuit alleges Michigan hospital discriminated against applicant’s religious beliefs on flu shots

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit Wednesday against Owosso, Mich.-based Memorial Healthcare, alleging the hospital rescinded a woman’s job offer because her religious views did not allow her to receive a flu shot.

According to the lawsuit, Memorial Healthcare withdrew its offer of a medical transcriptionist position to Yvonne Blair because she refused to take a flu shot due to religious objections.

Ms. Blair offered to wear a mask, and though the company has a policy in place allowing employees to wear masks as an alternative to receiving the flu shot, they still rescinded the offer.
