Legislation was recently signed into law that escalates fraudulent billing of a state-run healthcare program from a misdemeanor to a felony, and is therefore now punishable by up to $50,000 in fines and jail time, according to the report.
A separate piece of legislation was recently enacted that adds civil penalties for fraudulent billing on top of the criminal penalties. Knowingly submitting a false claim now carries a potential civil fine of between $10,000 and $50,000, according to the report.
