Under the proposal, Medicare beneficiaries would receive a fixed stipend to purchase a private health plan. While the proposal passed the Republican-majority House 228-191, it is unlikely to pass the Democrat-led Senate.
Rep. Ryan’s plan would leave the United States with $3.1 trillion in deficits over the next years; that figure is $3.3 trillion less than that in President Barack Obama’s budget plan, which was defeated 414-0 in a test vote Wednesday. The House also defeated a bipartisan group’s alternative budget 382-38 yesterday.
An alternative proposed by House Democrats, which did not include Rep. Ryan’s Medicare overhaul, was defeated 262-163 today.
