Florida lawmakers Sen. Alan Hays (R-Umatilla) and Rep. Jimmy Patronis (R-Panama City) have proposed Senate Bill 1588/House Bill 1233, which features patient advocates to navigate the new malpractice system, an independent medical review panel to examine claims, a compensation department to recommend appropriate compensation, an administrative law judge to ensure fairness and a quality improvement counsel to develop the root cause analysis of medical errors and establish best practices.
The lawmakers said the new system could eliminate up to $40 billion each year in unnecessary medical costs in Florida.
