“Patents are key to innovation and competition, so it’s important for us to get a better understanding of how [patent trolls] operate,” said FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez in the report. “We want to use our 6(b) authority to expand the empirical picture on the costs and benefits of [patent troll] activity. What we learn will support informed policy decisions.”
More information from the FTC was unavailable due to the shutdown.
In July, the AHA and other advocacy groups sent a letter to Congressional leaders, urging action to confront patent trolls.
