Former payroll director at New York hospital accused of embezzling

A former Nassau University Medical Center payroll director is accused of embezzling more than $121,000 from the hospital, Nassau County (N.Y.) District Attorney's Office announced March 24.

Arlena Mann, 46, is accused of using the East Meadow, N.Y.-based hospital's payroll software to make direct payments into accounts she controlled, according to a news release.

Between March 2019 and July 2021, Mann allegedly used the hospital's payroll software to arrange for payments to former NUMC employees who had recently left the organization, according to the release. Mann allegedly changed the banking information associated with the former employees to a different account she controlled.

Once payments were processed, Mann allegedly voided them within NUMC's bookkeeping software to create the appearance the payments were never processed and no money was transferred, according to the release. She allegedly made more than 50 such transfers during that time period.

An investigation determined the stolen funds did not involve money due to any of the former employees and were exclusively NUMC funds, according to the release. The alleged theft was discovered by an employee in NUMC’s payroll division in spring 2021. Mann was fired in July 2021 after an internal investigation.

Mann was indicted March 24 on charges of grand larceny in the second degree and six counts of falsifying business records in the first degree, according to the release. If convicted, she faces a potential maximum of five to 15 years in prison.
