Former finance director who stole nearly $1M from hospital sentenced to prison

Edward Calloway, former financial director for G.B. Cooley Hospital in Monroe, La., has been sentenced to 24 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for federal wire fraud.

According to prosecutors, Mr. Calloway, 44, was the hospital's financial director from 2016 through October 2019. From 2010 until 2016, he served as its first staff accountant.

In 2012, Mr. Calloway began stealing from Cooley Hospital by transferring money from its general fund, sinking fund and payroll accounts to his personal accounts, according to the Justice Department. He used a computer to initiate the automated clearing house bank transfers.

The bill of information filed in the case charged Mr. Calloway with causing an ACH transfer of $1,945.34 to be transferred by an interstate wire from a Cooley Hospital account to his personal bank account. His theft continued until October 2019 and resulted in a total loss of more than $892,000.

Mr. Calloway pleaded guilty to wire fraud on Dec. 12.
