The former chairman of the ophthalmology department at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia has been convicted of 150 counts of healthcare fraud and other related charges, according to a Philadelphia Business Journal report.
Joseph J. Kubacki, MD, was charged for causing thousands of false claims to be submitted to benefit programs with charges exceeding $4.5 million. The claims pertained to services provided from 2002-2007 that were never rendered by Dr. Kubacki, as he did not personally see or evaluate the patients.
A complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office says Dr. Kubacki instructed employees in the opthalmology department to leave medical records by his office door so he could later alter them to falsely indicate he had seen the patients.
Dr. Kubacki’s sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
