Feds to protect healthcare workers with moral objections to certain services: 4 things to know

Healthcare workers who claim moral objections to providing certain services will receive protections under a new proposed federal rule, according to a Politico report.

Here are four things to know.

1. The proposed rule from the Trump administration would apply to healthcare workers who morally object to performing abortions. It would also apply to those who decline to "treat transgender patients based on their gender identity" and "other services for which they have moral objections," according to the report.

2. The proposed rule would be enforced by the HHS civil rights office. It authorizes the office to further protect these healthcare workers and penalize organizations that prevent workers from indicating their moral objections, according to Politico, which cites "sources on and off" Capitol Hill.

3. Various details about the proposed rule are unknown. According to the report, the White House is reviewing the proposed rule, which could be released later this month.

4. HHS did not respond to Politico's requests for comment.
