Federal judge reverses $12.3M patent infringement verdict against UnitedHealth's Optum

A federal appeals court overturned a 2015 verdict against UnitedHealth Group's OptumInsight that found the advisory consulting firm infringed on a smaller rival company's patent, Reuters reports.

In 2015, a California federal jury awarded Cave Consulting Group $12.3 million-plus in the company's patent infringement case against OptumInsight, according to Law 360. The jury determined OptumInsight infringed on two of Cave Consulting's patents, which measured physician efficiency and patient health risk categorization. The jury also rejected UnitedHealth's counterclaim Cave Consulting  infringed on UnitedHealth's patent.

The federal circuit court's March 21 decision wiped out the $12.3 million patent infringement verdict.
