Dr. Tariq Mahmood to Plead Guilty Just Days Before Trial

Just days before his May 12 trial date, Tariq Mahmood, MD, has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud in connection with his involvement in a Medicare and Medicaid fraud scheme from 2010 to 2013, according to Dallas News report.

Dr. Mahmood is the former owner of several hospitals in Texas, including Cozby German Hospital in Grand Saline, Central Texas Hospital in Cameron and Community General Hospital in Dilley.

A federal grand jury indictment was issued against Dr. Mahmood April 13, 2013, charging him with conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and seven counts of healthcare fraud.

According to the indictment, Dr. Mahmood changed, deleted and incorrectly sequenced diagnostic codes in a way that did not reflect the actual diagnoses and conditions of patients and subsequently submitted false claims to Medicaid and Medicare for those services.

Dr. Mahmood could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison for his guilty plea to the conspiracy charge, according to the Dallas News.
