Contract worker arrested, accused of bringing gun to Mississippi hospital

A contract worker at Anderson Regional Medical Center was arrested May 8 after she allegedly brandished a handgun inside the Meridian, Miss.-based hospital, according to ABC affiliate WTOK.

The woman allegedly displayed the weapon in the hospital cafeteria's private kitchen, a hospital spokesperson told Becker's. The gun was not discharged, and no one was harmed in the incident, according to a May 9 statement from John Anderson, president and CEO of Anderson Regional Health System.

"The individual exited the building within seconds of this action. Anderson security officers secured the entire campus immediately in order to prevent re-entry," Mr. Anderson said, adding that the hospital was placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution.

Anderson Regional Medical Center lifted the lockdown several hours after the incident occurred, and heightened security measures were in place until police apprehended the individual, Mr. Anderson said in a statement to Becker's.

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Kamara May, was charged with crimes against sovereignty or administration of government. She is currently being held on a $20,000 bond.
