Connecticut AG Scrutinizes Hospital Facility Fees

Seeking legislation requiring greater disclosure of hospital facility fees, Connecticut's attorney general is asking patients to submit complaints if their healthcare provider unexpectedly billed them a facility fee.

Attorney General George Jepsen announced his intent last month to seek legislation that would require disclosure of hospital facility fees, which are included as a component of outpatient care fees in addition to professional services billed by providers.

The AG's focus would likely center on facility fees charged by physician practices, ambulatory surgery centers or urgent care centers that were previously independent but have since come under the umbrella of a hospital or health system. These centers may not disclose their relationship with a hospital or the fact that they will charge a separate facility fee to cover a portion of the hospital's operating expenses.

Connecticut residents who were billed for a facility fee without notice from their provider when receiving treatment can submit a complaint to the AG online. The AG is also asking patients who experienced difficulty learning the precise amount of their facility fee to submit feedback.
