Denise Buenning, deputy director of the CMS Office of E-Health Standards, told attendees CMS has had internal conversations about the delay and is working on a response, which will be presented to CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner, according to the report. She said HHS will “be making an announcement shortly.”
She also said the delay came as a surprise to CMS but that the revised timeframe won’t be an ICD-10 “killer.” Under the Protection Access to Medicare Act of 2014, which President Barack Obama signed into law earlier this month, the switch to ICD-10 has been pushed back until at least Oct. 1, 2015. The delay has been met with frustration from hospital leaders and other stakeholders who must re-evaluate their ICD-10 implementation efforts. A notice posted on CMS’ website last week said official guidance is coming “soon.”
