Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Suing Former Executive for Alleged PHI Theft

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta has filed a lawsuit against a former executive for allegedly stealing protected health information and hospital data.

The suit alleges Sharon McCray, who had served as the hospital's corporate audit advisor, began emailing herself children's PHI as well as information on the hospital's affiliated healthcare providers, legal correspondence, financial information and other confidential material shortly after she announced her resignation.

Ms. McCray admitted to emailing the information to herself, and claimed she had done so to "use the Protected Information as backup records for her new employment with an unidentified employer to use as a reference," according to the suit. She later said she had emailed the information to herself in order to complete her work from home.

As Ms. McCray has allegedly not complied with Children's request to return or destroy the information, the suit requests a court order for her to do so.
