Chicago pharmacy owner convicted in $25M kickback scheme

A Chicago pharmacy owner was convicted for his role in a $25 million kickback scheme to obtain Medicare and other government payments. 

According to the Justice Department, Mark Sorensen, 53, worked for Symed, a medical equipment pharmacy. The company paid kickbacks to conspirators to obtain patients to bill to Medicare, Tricare and workers' compensation programs.

Three other conspirators pleaded guilty to conspiracy to pay and receive kickbacks. 

Mr. Sorenson was convicted of one count of conspiracy and three counts of payment of illegal kickbacks by a jury on Jan. 19, according to the Justice Department. 

He faces up to five years in prison on each count.
