Yorai “Benny” Benzeevi, MD, former CEO of Healthcare Conglomerate Associates, is facing disciplinary action from the Medical Board of California, which is seeking to suspend or revoke his medical license.
The April 24 filing follows his Nov. 14 sentencing by the Tulare (Calif.) County Superior Court for public corruption crimes. He was ordered to pay $2.4 million in restitution: $2 million to Tulare Local Healthcare District and $400,000 to Lone Pine, Calif.-based Southern Inyo Healthcare District.
Dr. Benzeevi pleaded no contest to six felony counts of conflict of interest and two misdemeanor counts of failure to timely disclose campaign expenditures and using an official position for personal gain.
In the complaint, Medical Board of California Executive Director Reji Varghese asked the board to suspend or revoke Dr. Benzeevi’s license, alleging that Dr. Benzeevi is subject to disciplinary action because he was convicted of a crime “substantially related to the qualities, functions, or duties of a physician,” and engaged in corrupt, dishonest, and unprofessional conduct.
Dr. Benzeevi’s physician and surgeon certificate was issued in 2001 and is set to expire Nov. 30 unless renewed, according to the complaint.
He was previously sentenced to time served in custody, two years’ probation, and 600 hours of community service, which have been completed.
Becker’s has reached out to HCCA, the Tulare Local Healthcare District, the Medical Board of California and Dr. Benzeevi’s attorney and will update this story if more information becomes available.
