The "Physicians Payments Sunshine Act" would require doctors to report all kinds of industry compensation, ranging from small gifts to royalties to consulting fees. Drug samples and short-term device loans would not be included.
In addition, the bill would require all drug companies and device manufacturers that are not publicly traded to disclose ownership by any physicians or their immediate family members. Fines for companies who fail to report this information could be as much as $1 million.
