Steven L. Shafer, MD, editor-in-chief of Anesthesia & Analgesia, said many manuscripts combine original text with text from other sources. He believes most authors do not plagiarize with malicious intent.
According to the release, around 10 percent of the 150 submissions scanned each month for plagiarism are returned to the authors with a request to rewrite plagiarized text in their own words. Dr. Shafer said in order to curb plagiarism, authors should screen their own manuscripts for problems prior to submission.
