In the letter, AHA President and CEO Rich Umbdenstock cited Ms. Tavenner’s accomplishments as acting CMS administrator, including reducing red tape and regulatory burdens, spearheading the Partnership for Patients initiative, which has helped hospitals reduce infection rates, and pioneering new payment methods.
Mr. Umbdenstock also noted Ms. Tavenner’s extensive healthcare background. “Marilyn’s varied and rich background as a nurse, healthcare executive and government official at the state and national levels gives her a unique perspective on healthcare and the challenges facing healthcare providers at this time,” he wrote.
President Barack Obama recently nominated Ms. Tavenner to lead CMS for the second time. She has been acting as CMS administrator since December 2011.
