Two New Jersey physicians and their Montclair-based medical practice agreed to pay $1 million to settle allegations they billed Medicare and Medicaid for unnecessary procedures.
Fadi El-Atat, MD, and Sarah Abdul-Sater, MD, knowingly sought reimbursement for medically unnecessary balance tests, pulmonary function tests, allergy tests, autonomic nervous tests, and cardiology ultrasound tests, according to an April 28 Justice Department news release.
The alleged False Claims Act violations occurred between Jan. 1, 2013, and Aug. 31, 2023. The allegations were first made in a whistleblower complaint; the whistleblower will receive $180,000 of the settlement, the release said.
