A male patient approached an ED staff member with a sharp object and stabbed the victim in the chest, according to police. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. and the staff member was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition. The suspect was arrested and an investigation is ongoing, police said.

A spokesperson for Provident Hospital, part of Chicago-based Cook County Health, said two staff members were injured in the incident. They have both been treated and released. The hospital said it is providing additional security and resources to support staff in light of the incident.

SEIU Local 73 told ABC affiliate WLS the victims include a physician and physician assistant. The union represents around 1,400 Cook County Health employees.

“Violence against healthcare workers is on the rise, and it is unacceptable. No one should have to fear for their safety while doing their job,” a Provident spokesperson said in a statement. “This issue transcends physical harm — it impacts the emotional and psychological well-being of our entire team, and ultimately affects the quality of care we are able to provide. While we remain committed to providing the best care possible to our patients, we must also acknowledge that healthcare environments should be safe spaces for both patients and providers.”
