On July 1, North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein signed a bill into law to enter the Physician Assistant Licensure Compact, which allows PAs to practice outside the state where they were licensed.

North Carolina joins 18 others states in the compact, which aims to reduce the administrative burden of multi-state licensure and enable PAs to be quickly deployed in areas “with the most urgent healthcare needs,” according to the American Academy of Physician Associates.

In late June, Connecticut joined the PA licensure compact. The other states participating in the compact are Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

It will take 18 to 24 months for the compact to be operational in Connecticut and North Carolina, according to the AAPA.
