Hawaii lawmakers reconvene to aid hospital workers

Hawaii lawmakers called a special session to amend Senate Bill 2077, which aims to provide hospital workers in Maui with state benefits, according to the Honolulu Civil Beat.

The bill aims to provide $40 million to hospital employees with the option to receive severance benefits or a special retirement benefit as Maui hospitals transition to private ownership. It was recently vetoed by Hawaiian governor David Ige.

Legislators said they will not move to override the governor's veto, but will work with him to create a bill that will protect the welfare of Maui residents.

If signed into law, the bill would apply to 1,400 unionized workers at the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation's Maui Regional hospitals, including Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital in Wailuku and Lanai Community Hospital.

Lawmakers will give a final vote on the amended bill on July 20.
