WakeMed would use the $50 million to develop 40-60 mental health beds in Wake County, N.C. The company’s offer follows its rejected proposal to buy Rex Healthcare from Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health Care for $750 million.
Bill Atkinson, PhD, WakeMed’s president and CEO, sent a letter to Gov. Beverly Perdue and other officials on May 18 stating his case for purchasing Rex Healthcare. Among other points, he said, “We are not in a position to shoulder mental health care alone.”
