The two groups formed a joint venture for the Children’s Hospital so development could begin in advance of Vanguard’s full acquisition of DMC. The $1.5 billion sale was recently delayed until Dec. 31 to grant time for approval from Michigan’s attorney general.
The $43.5 million Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center in Detroit will cost $10 million more than originally planned due to an additional fifth floor. At the groundbreaking ceremony, Mike Duggan, DMC CEO, said Vanguard officials insisted on the development of a fifth floor, calling original construction plans, “too small,” according to the report.
The building is expected to open in Jan. 2012.
