The health systems finalized their merger May 1, 2016, after a two-year transaction.
Since merging, the health systems have opened a number of facilities in the New Castle area, including the UPMC Jameson Women’s Center. UPMC also added the former New Castle-based Jameson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as a fourth campus for its UPMC Schools of Nursing program.
Officials have created a regional healthcare plan which aims to make UPMC Jameson serve as the health system’s primary center for acute care services, including expanded cardiology, intensive care and cardiothoracic-pulmonary departments. As part of the regional plan, officials renovated UPMC Jameson’s former emergency department into a regional Heart and Vascular Institute set to open in July, according to the report.
“There has been thoughtful deliberation about how to best coordinate services,” said Dave Martin, senior vice president of the hospital services division of UPMC. “It’s about strategic placement of primary care and physician specialists to reduce duplication and specialize services maximizing quality. We’re focusing to meet patients where they are, to align with community needs and improve health care for the region.”
